As we move forward into 2008, I thought I'd share some of the accomplishments by our staff, and hopes for the coming year. After taking over the LCR on 1 November last year, MNR has been dealing with a severely out of shape plant. As is well known, 5 derailments occured within the first six months. All on the branch. However, service has been consistent throughout the last six months, with no derailments occuring. The operating department continues to run slowly but surely. Crews are continually receiving training in a number of areas, and their professionalism shows. Also, new crew members are coming on board in preperation of expanding service. The engineering department has done amazing feats with limited resources throughout the system. Evidence of their level of accomplishment can be seen in the lack of derailments and improved infrstructure. The mechanical side just keeps things moving, and for the most part unseen. But without these employees, the railroad would face a major struggle. Mechanical is responsible not only for locomotives, but add to that two cabooses, five motor vehicles, a plethora of engineering equipment, and the RIP track. Signals and Communications - a light bulb is my speed, but the signal system just operates as it should. And it sure isn't modern, either. With the safety of our crews and the public in the hands of C&S; the perfect safety record speaks volumes. The traffic department in many ways is the face of the railroad, but few people realize what is involved to keep the system fluid. From interchanging cars out of K-Falls, to customer lists, and on to accounting, payroll, and claims. The staff here performs daily in what can be a high stress department at times. Yet they perfom and the trains keep rolling. MNR does have a dedicated group of people, and if you're out exploring our service area, feel free to stop and visit with any of our folks. I'm sure they would enjoy the chance to talk about their MNR. And don't forget to thank them, for without the efforts of the above folks, there would be no MNR. I have posted a few photos of the staff at work, including the new power in New York. (Hope the twins are on the road in January!) In 2008, look for the branch to continue to receive tender care. Plans call for approx. one-third to be removed from excepted status. Look for the new main line power and a new switch engine at Lakeview. Service levels are also increasing, should be making a daily, yes daily, except weekends, from Klamath Falls to Lakeview. Servce to commence 1 June 08. So here's to an exciting 2008; hope everyone is ready for the trip! Don Blansett All photos by Don Blansett
